Inshore Rescue Boat-North Student Program

The Canadian Coast Guard hires and trains students each summer to become members of an Inshore Rescue Boat crew. Students will be trained in Search and Rescue (SAR) operations by Canadian Coast Guard regional staff and following successful completion of training, will be assigned as crew members to Inshore Rescue Boat stations. Each station is staffed with 2 teams of 4 persons, 1 supervisor and 3 crew members.

To apply to the Inshore Rescue Boat-North program, you must be an Indigenous student

  • with various educational backgrounds and career interests; and
  • are currently registered full-time in a recognized post-secondary institution (CEGEP, college and university) or other ongoing educational or training program; or
  • are returning to full time studies at a recognized post-secondary institution or other ongoing educational or training program in the next academic term

Once selected into the program, the candidate may participate in the program for up to 2 seasons after the successful completion of their studies.

Candidates must meet the following criteria by February 28, 2019:

  1. hold a valid Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level C
  2. hold a valid standard First-Aid Certificate

Please note

You do not need the above criteria to apply. Training will be provided for successful candidates; however, you must pass and complete the training by the specified date to continue in the program.

As a condition of employment, candidates must also pass the following mandatory requirements:

  • successfully pass a Health Canada or Transport Canada physical exam and a hearing exam (Health Evaluation Schedule)
  • meet the necessary security standard (National Security Investigation)
